Artist's Comments

ahhhhh @_@
i really enjoyed making this piece. i struggled on the face to tone down the anime-ness of my style. hopefully it looks decent?
anyways, zero suit samus was a blast to play on Super Smash Brothers Brawl and I've wanted to draw fanart of her for a while. here's a super sexy samus

edit 2: added a slight glow to her body to make it better integrated with a very lazy background.
edit: just so everyone knows, i've been going through a style crisis for the past six or seven months. i don't really know what my style is, or how to draw in it. i'm kind of amazed when my faces don't come out looking like poo. i'm trying to move towards something more universal than anime, but something that's equally appealing so that people want to pay me for prints, etc. i don't know how well i'm succeeding. any comments on the progress of my style is appreciated, whether positive or negative.

watermarked, obviously

but you have your own style right there! O.o
from the way you draw the faces of your characters, to the way you color them. I know i can pull up an art buddy of mine, and that they would say this is not anime. :D

I absolutely love Samus, makes me wish i had her body. This beautiful, i have always loved how smoothly you color. ^_^ it just catches my eye.

This looks awesome. Samus pretty much rocks the casbah.

it DOES look decent...compared to the anim-looks i have seen.....if you were trying to get AWAY from that....you did!! :D

You're born, you grow, you give birth to your own children, you grow even older, and eventually you die. It's a sad cycle, but you need to find the one thing that matters the most to you in life. Treasure it, cherish it, love it. Love always...

Decent, you say? Part of me feel like calling this decent would be an insult. To be honest with you, this is a very solid portrayal of the unmasked SSBB favorite. Samus is presented in a very appealing way here, and it's with a nice blend of the "anime-ness" that you were aiming for and a touch of realism that really provides that spark. The coloring of this image is awesome from hair to suit, and the pose, while it does allow for Samus to look quite attractive, isn't over the top by any means.

As far as your concerns go in regards to your style, I do think I see something in this image that maybe shows a bit of indecision on your part, even if it's not a really big problem. With Samus' face, there does appear to be a slightly different look with the way the bridge of her nose and the right (her left) side of the face is treated. While colored and shaded well, it does jump out in a rather unique way when compared to the rest of her face. As far as how you're doing, I think it's actually a good thing that you can tweak and mix your style up a bit in order to accmmodate for different kinds of themes and drawings. In any case, with work like this, it's only a matter of time before you find what you're looking for in your style.

Anyways, superb work on this all-around. I wish you the best in getting out of whatever jam you feel you're in, even though it's hard to tell with this quality of work. :)

Don't worry about style so much. if there's anything that great artists have taught me, it's that style is something that flows naturally when allowed and stops dead when it's forced. Feel free to experiment and try out absurd techniques that you would never think about trying otherwise. Besides, if you were only capable of one single, absolute, style wouldn't you be afraid of having hit the end of your creative rope?
